The 19 Days of the Iran vs US–Israel War

From a surprise decapitation strike to a spreading regional war — a comprehensive record of one of the most consequential conflicts in modern Middle East history.

On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched surprise coordinated strikes on Iran under Operation Epic Fury. The opening salvos killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dozens of senior officials. Iran retaliated with waves of missiles and drones targeting Israel, US bases, and Gulf Arab states. The conflict has since expanded across the Middle East, closing the Strait of Hormuz and triggering a global energy crisis.

International
World Reactions
United Nations Condemns Both Sides

Secretary-General Guterres condemned both the US-Israel strikes as violations of international law and Iran's retaliatory attacks on Gulf sovereignties. He urged an immediate return to diplomacy, warning the conflict had "squandered an opportunity" following Iran's breakthrough nuclear concessions to Oman just a day before strikes began.

European Union Mixed

Von der Leyen called for "maximum restraint" on Day 1, then shifted by Day 2 to backing a "credible transition" in Iran — the EU's first explicit endorsement of regime change in Tehran. EU foreign ministers later issued a joint statement calling Iran's counter-strikes "inexcusable." EU fuel import costs rose €3 billion in 10 days.

United Kingdom Supportive (Limited)

Permits US use of Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford. RAF Typhoons intercept Iranian drones near Qatar. PM Starmer condemns Iranian counter-strikes jointly with France and Germany. Says he "does not believe in regime change from the skies." Calls for diplomacy to resume.

Russia Condemns US-Israel

Describes US-Israeli strikes as a "dangerous adventure" that could spark "catastrophe." Demands immediate cessation of aggressive actions and resumption of diplomatic settlement based on international law. Does not provide active military support to Iran.

China Condemns US-Israel

Ambassador calls strikes "brazen." Calls for respect of Iran's sovereignty and an immediate ceasefire. China was not informed in advance. Chinese government fuel price controls limited domestic energy price increase to 11%. Closely monitoring Hormuz disruptions affecting Chinese oil imports.

India Neutral / Concerned

PM Modi speaks with UAE President on Hormuz and West Asia stability. India imports 88% of crude oil. Government declares natural gas emergency. LPG raised by Rs 60. India prioritises four key sectors for gas distribution. Rupee falls to Rs 92.42/$. IPO plans delayed due to market volatility.

Arab Gulf States Caught in Middle

Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait host US forces but were also targeted by Iranian retaliation. UAE reports 941 Iranian drones detected; 65 fell within UAE territory. Bahrain intercepted 74 missiles and 92 drones. At least one Gulf ally ran low on interceptor munitions.

Arsenal
Weapons & Warfare

US uses 20+ weapons systems. Iran retaliates with missiles, drones, mines.

US / Israel — Air
B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber
Used for fortified ballistic missile facilities and hardened underground sites in Iran.
B-1 Lancer / B-52
Non-stealth bombers flying over Iranian airspace by Day 8+ — signal of near-total air dominance.
F-22 Raptor / F-35 Lightning II
F-35I "Adir" (Israeli) shot down Iranian Yak-130 — first stealth-vs-manned combat kill in history.
EA-18G Growler
Electronic warfare; jams Iranian air defences and communications. Deployed from USS Abraham Lincoln.
LUCAS Drone
Combat debut. Low-Cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (~$35,000 each), reverse-engineered from Iran's Shahed-136. Built by SpektreWorks, Arizona.
US — Missiles
Tomahawk Cruise Missile
~$2.5M each. Fired from Arleigh Burke-class destroyers (USS Thomas Hudner). Long-range precision strike.
Precision Strike Missile (PrSM)
Combat debut. Advanced seeker; up to 500km range. Used with HIMARS for dispersed targets.
Iran — Missiles
Fattah-2 (Claimed Hypersonic)
Iran claims Mach 15 glide vehicle. Independent experts say likely upgraded ballistic missile with maneuvering warhead designed to evade interceptors.
Kheibar Shekan / Sejjil
Solid-fuel MRBMs. Faster launch readiness. Sejjil can strike Israel and all Gulf US bases.
Soumar Cruise Missile
2,500 km range land-attack cruise missile. Flies low, terrain-hugging. Harder to intercept than ballistic missiles.
Iran — Drone Systems
Shahed-136 ("Witness")
~3.5m long. Speed 185 km/h. Cheap one-way attack drone. Thousands deployed; many penetrated Gulf defences. Iran launched 800+ on Day 1 alone, declining to ~75/day by Day 15.
Arash-2
Long-range heavy Iranian drone. Extended strikes across the region.
Drone Swarm Tactics
Hundreds launched simultaneously to overwhelm air defences. Each Shahed costs Iran ~$20,000 to produce; each interception costs Gulf/Israeli defence $3M–$12M. Classic asymmetric cost attrition.
US Naval Assets
Arleigh Burke Destroyers
USS Thomas Hudner and others in Eastern Mediterranean. Firing Tomahawks at Iran.
USS Abraham Lincoln
Aircraft carrier hosting EA-18G Growlers and F/A-18s in support of Op. Epic Fury.
Iran — Naval
Strait of Hormuz Blockade
IRGC declares Strait closed to adversaries. Hundreds of ships stranded. Maersk suspends Hormuz crossings. Affects ~20% of global oil supply.
Sinkings
50+ Iranian naval vessels sunk by March 13. Fast-attack craft, midget submarines, and mine-laying capabilities destroyed.
Air Defence Systems
THAAD
Terminal High Altitude Area Defense. 20–50% of US THAAD supply used in prior 2025 conflict alone; now under further depletion pressure.
SM-3 (Standard Missile-3)
Fired from Arleigh Burke destroyers. Long-range ballistic missile interceptor. 20%+ of US supply used in the June 2025 war.
Iron Dome (Israel)
Short-range rocket/drone interceptor. Operational but under stress from volume of attacks.
Iron Beam (Laser)
High-energy laser. Largely not deployed — "not yet ready for regular operational deployment." Environmental conditions (dust, humidity) reduce effectiveness.
